Contrary to the popular belief among Christians, we are not created in the image of God. They like to point out Genesis 1:27 as proof, but a careful reading of scripture says otherwise. Genesis 1:27 reads So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. It seems pretty straightforward, but it’s important to realize that God created Adam and Eve in his own image, not us. Like God, Adam and Eve were perfect, therefore, the image of God.
But then something happened. Sin entered the world. And Adam and Eve became tainted.
Genesis 5:3 clearly shows that we are created in the image of Adam. In the image of sin. We are not the perfect beings created in God’s own image. If that were so, then God would’ve had to form us from the dust as he did Adam. If that were so, then Christ is unnecessary because we would be untainted by sin. Instead, we are created in the image an imperfect man. In the likeness of sin. So Christ is necessary.
